After a disappointing loss against the Anchorage Bucs Saturday, the Miners proved that while they were down, they were not out on this weekend. Against the Peninsula Oilers on Sunday, they showed what winning baseball is all about in the Valley.
Mat-Su used an aggressive approach on the base paths and took advantage of a handful of Oilers errors during a 9-2 win at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
Much like the first few games the contest started off somewhat quietly. However, the Miners made mistakes early that looked eerily familiar to the last game. Cole Dawson was able to score on a wild pitch from Ryan Harrahill, who started the game on the mound for the Miners.
Mat-Su was not going to go down the same road again however. They took a sharp right onto scoring avenue with a two-run single from the red-hot Drake Kerr who was able to score two runners on a bases-loaded situation to give Mat-Su a 2-1 lead.
However, things were just getting started.
The game remained somewhat quiet until the fourth inning when Kellen Strohmeyer and Nick Bisaccia combined for one of the wildest couple of runs you will ever see as a throw from second to home was offline enough to send both of them home from third and second respectively.
Now with a 4-1 lead against the Oilers, Ryan Richard was able to join the party in the fifth when an RBI was delivered from Brandyn Durand to make the score 5-1. From this point forward, Mat-Su really began the “Rally in the Valley.”
In the sixth inning, Mat-Su has been superb this season, and this game was absolutely no exception. Dom Patrizi, who was working as the designated hitter for this game, delivered a two-run double to score both Drake Kerr and Nick Bisaccia. Then the other Nick, Ferri that is, would bring home Patrizi on a sacrifice fly to center field.
From that point forward Mat-Su, while in a comfortable position, worked harder than ever to finish the fight.
Peninsula would score on a solo home run from Colin Robson in the top of the seventh inning, but it would only do minimal damage as the Miners would respond with an RBI single from arguably the player of the game Chritian Perez, who would cap the off the day with a 9-2 lead for the Miners.
The Miners had superb performances all across the board but none compared to Christian Perez who would end up with three hits and four total appearances on base. While his work may not have been quite as dramatic as others on the team, it was the blueprint for success. Now Mat-Su finds themselves at 3-1 and tied atop the ABL Standings. Now they set their sites ahead to the “crossroads of the word,” home of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots.
