Miners split with Oilers

PALMER — Last week, Tyler Stubblefield cruised through the Anchorage Glacier Pilots lineup, fanning 11 hitters in a 2-1 win over the Pilots.

Sunday, Stubblefield followed his last performance with another stellar outing. The Texas A&M lefthander pitched a complete game to lead the Miners to a 4-1 win over the Peninsula Oilers at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

Stubblefield struck out seven, and scattered six hits and one earned run over seven innings of work. He lowered his earned run average to 1.45 with the win, and improved to 2-0 in ABL play.

Peninsula’s lone run came in the top of the first inning. Stubblefield allowed three singles in the first (half the hits he gave up in the game), including the Mylz Jones hit that drove in Jake Sandlin. That play gave Peninsula the 1-0 lead.

The Miners got on the scoreboard and took a lead in the fourth inning. Cameron Newell walked and scored on a Matt Decker double to tie the score at 1. Brandon Smith helped break the tie with a single that scored Decker.

Mat-Su extended its lead in the fifth. Josh Meyer tripled and scored on a Jordan Rodgers sacrifice fly to give the Miners a 3-1 lead. Decker scored on a Nick Blaser single in the sixth to push Mat-Su’s lead to 4-1.

The Mat-Su win was part of a doubleheader against the Oilers. Peninsula forced the split with a 10-1 win in the afternoon game. The Oilers struck for six of their 10 runs in the fifth inning. Eight of Peninsula’s 10 runs were unearned.

Starter Kyle Serrano was tagged with the loss. Serrano struck out six and allowed only one hit. Four runs were scored during Serrano’s 4 1/3 innings on the mound, but none were earned.

The Miners finished with seven hits in the loss, all singles. Paul Panaccione was 3 for 4 with a run scored. Smith, Rodgers, Hunter Simmons and Mitchell Nau also had a hit each.

Mat-Su stood at 9-4 in league play after the doubleheader. The Miners faced the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in Anchorage Monday night. Results were not available before press time. See frontiersman.com/sports for more.
