After consecutive rainouts over the weekend, the Mat-Su Miners finally had a chance to start their five-game road stretch against the Peninsula Oilers. Mat-Su swept the Oilers during a doubleheader Monday in Kenai.
Texas A&M sophomore Will Johnston tossed a three-hit, seven-inning complete game shutout to lead the Miners to a 4-0 win in the late game.
Johnston fanned 11 and walked only one. He lowered his earned run average to 2.55.
David Bermudez finished 2 for 4 at the plate with a run and two RBI in the win. Bermudez had a run-scoring single in the fifth, and hit his first home run of the summer in the seventh. Josh Mrozek and Tyler Rando also drove in runs for the Miners. Mrozek, Gerard Sweeney and JD Urso also scored.
Earlier in the day, Mat-Su beat the Oilers 3-1.
Aaron Winkler pitched a pair of scoreless innings and earned the win in relief. Evan Floyd pitched a perfect eighth to notch his second save of the summer.
Sam Thompson finished with two of Mat-Su’s seven hits in the win. Bermudez, Urso and Nick Cirelli scored runs. Casey Rother finished with an RBI.
The Miners also earned a 7-4 win over the Anchorage Glacier Pilots June 18 in Anchorage.
Rando led the Miners at the plate, finishing 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Rother had two hits and two runs. Aaron Walters also scored twice. Sweeney singled and drove in two runs. Cirelli collected a hit, run and RBI.
