Miners take down Pilots at home

ANCHORAGE — Early in their 2014 summer season, the Mat-Su Miners have been slugging their way to victories. But Sunday, it was the pitching staff’s turn to shine.

Mat-Su starter Tyler Stubblefield struck out 11 hitters, allowed only a pair of hits during a five scoreless innings and led the Miners to a 2-1 in over the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

Stubblefield, a Texas A&M lefthander, and four relievers allowed only five combined hits. Mat-Su pitchers also finished with 14 total strikeouts in the game.

Ryan Oglesby, Hayden Howard, Hunter Rodriguez and Vince Arobio also pitched in the game. Arobio worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings and earned the save.

Cameron Newell and Paul Panaccione helped provide the run support for the Mat-Su staff. Newell finished 2 for 3, with a double and an RBI. Panaccione also doubled in the win. He drove in a run and scored another.

Mat-Su improved to 8-4-1 overall and 5-3 in Alaska Baseball League play. The Miners sit in first place of the ABL’s National Division.

Bucs 12, Miners 3

ANCHORAGE — The Anchorage Bucs used an early surge to post a big win over the Mat-Su Miners at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage Saturday evening.

The Bucs scored a combined 10 runs during the first three innings during the 12-3 win over the Miners. Six of Anchorage’s runs came in the bottom of the third.

Cameron Newell and Josh Myers each hit solo home runs to lead the Miners. Dayne Wunderlich and Cameron Frost each finished with a pair of hits in the loss.

Mat-Su returns to Anchorage to face the Glacier Pilots Sunday at 7 p.m. at Mulcahy.

Miners hosting special night

PALMER — The Mat-Su Miners are hosting Frontiersman Military Appreciation Night Tuesday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer as the Miners take on the Chugiak Chinooks.

Game tickets are available at the Frontiersman office, located along the Palmer-Wasilla Highway between Trunk Road and Seward-Meridian Parkway. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
