FAIRBANKS — A long inning proved disastrous during the final game of a long stay in Fairbanks for the Mat-Su Miners.
The Athletes in Action Fire scored seven times in the third inning and posted a 10-4 win over the Miners at Growden Park in Fairbanks on Monday.
The game was Mat-Su’s fifth straight against AIA and eighth contest during a week-long stay in the Interior.
The Miners (26-12), who currently sit in third place in the Alaska Baseball League standings, held the early 1-0 lead, but AIA used those seven third-inning runs to take the 9-1 advantage.
Mat-Su scored three times in the seventh, but the Fire sealed the win with another run in the eighth.
The Miners finished with a dozen hits in the game, and four different players finished with two each, but Mat-Su couldn’t recover from the third inning.
Mat-Su took the early lead when Bret Schwartz led off the game with a single and scored on an Andy Mee hit. Mee recorded another RBI with a double in the seventh. Ryan Kaup, Matt Ozanne and Matt Wessinger all crossed home plate in the inning.
Sunday proved to be a more productive day for the Miners. Mat-Su needed just an inning to post a 10-8 win over AIA, in a game that was suspended on Friday night due to darkness.
The teams restarted the suspended game, tied at 8-8 in the 10th, on Sunday afternoon, and Kaup and Wessinger helped ensure a quick finish with run-scoring hits in the inning.
Later in the day, Mat-Su scored a 12-3 win over the Fire. Schwartz led the Miners at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Nick DeBiasse was 3-for-4 with four RBI. The Miners finished the road trip 3-5.
Mat-Su will cap the 2010 summer season with a four-day, five-game homestand. All five games will feature two of the top-three teams in the ABL. Third-place Mat-Su hosts the second-place Peninsula Oilers Wednesday and Thursday at 6 p.m., and the first-place Alaska Goldpanners in a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. and the season finale Saturday at 6 p.m. Heading into play today, the Panners (27-10) lead the Oilers (28-12) by a half-game in the ABL standings.
