The Palmer High School girls varsity soccer team kicked off its season in impressive fashion last week, securing two decisive victories and showcasing both offensive firepower and defensive strength. The boys also enjoyed a solid start with a win and a tie.
Both Palmer squads earned wins in their Northern Lights Conference season opener April 9 against Grace Christian at Palmer High.
The girls delivered a commanding performance, shutting out the Grizzlies 11-0. Lila Pettit and Kylee Korinko each tallied four goals, while Audrey Hallberg contributed two, and Kaylee Gallego added one. Assists were recorded by Gallego, Greta Campfield, Pettit and Hallberg.
The boys rallied to earn a 3-1 win. Bodie Miller tied the game with about 15 minutes left, scoring on a header off a Parker Johnson corner kick. Jackson Charton netted the game-winner. Kaleb Von Gunten added Palmer’s third goal. Johnson, Von Gunten and Charton finished with an assist each.
Palmer opened play April 7 against East Anchorage, with nonconference matches.
The girls scored an 8-1 win over East. Pettit led the charge with four goals, while Gallego and Korinko each added two goals to round out the scoring. Assists in the match came from Campfield, Jada Santana-Becker, Gallego, and Pettit, highlighting a strong team effort in the attack.
Palmer tied the East boys 1-1. Logan Johnson scored the lone PHS goal, with an assist from Charton.
