PALMER — After three days and three wins, the Palmer Moose earned the chance to hoist the trophy at their own tourney. Palmer used a 38-28 boys’ basketball win over Grace Christian Saturday to win the 2019 Palmer Elks Showdown.
Palmer held Grace to only one point during the third quarter in the win. Lavar Marshall led Palmer with a dozen points. Joe Rankin and Ronny Marshall added seven each. The win marked Palmer’s second over Grace is just more than a week. Lavar Marshall and Ronny Marshall were both named all-tourney.
Friday, Palmer beat West Valley 59-49 during the second day of the tourney.
Captain Joe Rankin scored eight of his 13 points during Palmer’s 21-point fourth quarter to help the Moose finish strong. Lavar Marshall led Palmer with 19. Ronny Marshall added a dozen.
That win came a night after the Moose blew out Sitka 82-34. Palmer had five scorers reach double digits. Lavar Marshall led the Moose with 20. Dae Osiensky added 19. Amiqaq MacLean (14), Caden Brown (12) and Ronny Marshall (11) also scored at least 11.
The Palmer girls finished 2-1 in the tournament. Senior Abriana Busbey hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to left the Moose to a 47-46 overtime win over Grace Saturday. Busbey scored four of Palmer’s six points during the extra frame, and led the Moose with a game-best 22 points. Avery Pettingill added eight, while Olivia Lundin and Danielle Umbarger chipped in seven each.
The Palmer girls opened their tournament with a 54-50 win over Sitka Thursday, but suffered a 54-31 loss to West Valley on Friday.
The Moose opened the game on a 19-12 run. Sitka climbed back into the game, outscoring the Moose 18-12 in the third. Catherine Uschmann led Palmer with a game-high 21 points. Abriana Busbey added 17.
Busbey scored a game-high 16 in the loss to the Wolfpack.
