PALMER — With three shutouts in three days, it was a pretty nice weekend for the Palmer Moose, and a fairly easy weekend for Palmer goalkeepers Chelsea Riley and Lanycha Zimmer.
Palmer allowed only one shot for the second time in three days and earned a 5-0 win over Nikiski at Machetanz Field on Saturday.
Skyview managed just one shot during Palmer’s 7-0 win on Thursday and the Moose held Homer without a shot during a 2-0 victory on Friday.
“We held control of the ball and were really able to dictate play,” Palmer head coach Brian Fish. “We had good shots, but our main focus was to control the play.”
The longtime PHS soccer coach was referring to his team’s efforts against Nikiski, but the statement could be true for the entire three-game stretch.
“We held possession and did what we wanted to do,” Fish said.
Shea Riggs led the Moose with a pair of goals during the win over Nikiski. Shawna Thein, Tess Anderson and Krysta Theisen also scored for the Moose.
Zimmer recorded the shutout in net.
Junior Korina Rissew accounted for both scores during the 2-0 win over Homer. Rissew posted goals in each half of a match that featured more than 20 Palmer shots.
“We weren’t really able to put anything in,” Fish said. “We’re still trying to find the back of the net consistently.”
Palmer improved to 3-1-0 with the wins.
PHS boys net win, tie
PALMER — Junior Zach Zegzdryn scored a pair of goals to lead the Moose to a 4-2 win over the Nikiski Bulldogs at Machetanz Field on Saturday.
Zegzdryn scored both of his goals in the first half to give the Moose the early 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Daniel Burton and junior Brennan Bohman also found the back of the net for PHS.
Nikiski scored right before the intermission to cut Palmer’s lead to 3-1, and the Bulldogs knocked in a header off a free kick during the second half.
The Moose are now 3-0-1 after the win.
Palmer and Homer played to a scoreless tie on Friday. Palmer goalie Brandon Wolsterman and Homer keeper Ben Daigle each recorded the shutout.
