WASILLA -- The Palmer Moose slipped by the Wasilla Warriors 3-2 (16-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12) at Wasilla High School in Region III volleyball action Tuesday.
"Both teams were a little hot and cold," Palmer head coach Steve Reynolds said. "We stunk it up in the first and played better in the second.
"A definite roller coaster kind of match."
Reynolds said it was the play of setter Jayme Irvine that led the Moose to victory. The senior had an outstanding night serving, collecting six aces. Irvine also earned points for Palmer on 30 of 31 serves.
"She missed one early and after that was on fire," Reynolds said.
Irvine also led the Moose with 24 digs and 38 assists.
Jessie Macknicki led the Moose hitters with 24 kills. Macknicki also recorded 23 digs.
Megan Sweeney added 22 digs for Palmer.
The Moose improve to 5-3 in region play with the win. Wasilla ends the 2003 Region III season with a 5-5 record.
Palmer will most likely occupy the second or third seed from the Northern Division in the Region III tourney next week at Colony High School.
Kodiak is currently second at 6-3 with a match against Homer this weekend.
Palmer will host Kenai and Soldotna this weekend.
With a pair of Palmer wins and a Kodiak loss, the Moose will earn the second spot.
At 7-1 with two matches to go, Colony has all but wrapped up the Region III north title.
Warriors top Hawks
Wasilla scored a 3-0 sweep over the Houston Hawks Friday at Wasilla High School.
The 4A Warriors erased a 10-8 deficit to the 3A Hawks in the third game to shut the door on Houston.
"(They're) a very good defensive team," Wasilla head coach Marge Johnson said of Houston. "You have to prepare and expect everything to come over."
Laurel Creel led the Warrior hitters with 16 kills in the match. Carlie Douglas added nine kills.
Kaylee Johnson led the Warriors defensively with 10 digs.
