ANCHORAGE — The Palmer Moose are deep into their Northern Lights Conference season. The Houston Hawks are just about ready to start their Mid-Alaska Conference schedule.
But on Saturday, both teams showed during a nonconference tournament that both squads may be improving at the right time.
The Palmer Moose won the Grace Christian Invitational at Grace Christian High School in Anchorage.
Brittany Arlow was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Nicole Cherrier and Jenna Arlow were named all-tourney for the Moose.
While the Hawks didn’t finish as the top team of the tourney, first-year head coach Lynn Edwards was happy to see her young Hawks squad put together a couple of victories.
Houston split with the Seward Seahawks during the first day of the tourney, and beat the Bethal Warriors on Saturday.
“They just need to get some wins under their belt,” Edwards said of her team. “(Now) they’re confidence is really starting to come around.”
Wasilla wins twice on Kenai Peninsula
SOLDOTNA — The Wasilla Warriors scored a pair of victories during a three-day trip to the Kenai Peninsula last weekend.
Wasilla posted a 3-2 (25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 21-25, 15-8) win over the Kenai Kardinals at Kenai Central High School.
The Warriors also notched a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-16) win over Nikiski.
Soldotna, the lone undefeated squad in the NLC, handed Wasilla a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-21) loss.
