PALMER — Palmer hit the ice with only six upperclassmen Wednesday, but one of those veterans was able to help provide a big win for a very young team.
Junior Travis Dreyer scored early in the extra period to give the Moose a 4-3 overtime win over the Chugiak Mustangs at MTA Events Center in Palmer.
“It was a great shot. I’m happy for him,” Palmer head coach Brad Hanson said after the victory. “I’m happy an older, team-leader kind of guy got that game win.”
Dreyer stepped up from his spot on the blue line, found a loose puck in the slot and fired it past Chugiak goalie Matt Bennett.
Dreyer’s tally was the last of four unanswered goals for the Moose, who faced a 3-0 deficit late in the first period.
“We got outshot pretty good in the first, but we kind of settled down,” Hanson said.
William Casey, Taylor Garner and Cody Curfman each posted first-period goals for the Mustangs, who outshot Palmer 12-6 in the first period. But before the first horn sounded, freshman Noah Richards used a shot from the right point to put the Moose on the scoreboard.
“It was kind of a seeing-eye goal. It lifted the spirits, completely changed the momentum,” Hanson said.
Sparked by the Richards score, Palmer added a pair of goals in the second period.
Junior Luke Wright scored early in the second to cut Chugiak’s lead to a goal. Freshman Hayden Moistner sent a centering pass from behind the net to Wright, who buried the shot. Freshman Christopher Dojka scored at the 6:31 mark to tie the game at 3.
“It was a good win for the young kids,” Hanson said of the Moose, who suited up eight freshmen in the game. “We talked about playing hard, trying to make good decisions with the puck, trying to relax and gain some poise. As the game went on, we kind of played that way.”
Junior Ashton Good made 34 saves in the win, including 25 during the final two periods. Wright, Moistner and Jarrett Johns pitched in two assists each.
