WASILLA — The Palmer Moose stood at halftime, facing a two-goal deficit to rival Wasilla as one of their top talents, senior goalkeeper Brandon Banks, was kept on the sideline with nagging injuries.
But thanks to a spark from its freshman class, Palmer erased the bleak with a glimpse of what could be a bright future.
A pair of freshmen scored goals and freshman keeper Alex Coyne kept the Warriors off the scoreboard during the second half, and the Moose were able to rebound to force a 2-2 Northern Lights Conference tie at Palmer High School Tuesday.
Freshman Thomas Youngblood and Isaiah Montoya each netted a second-half score to help the Moose tie the match, and avoid Palmer’s first loss to the Warriors in more than three years.
Wasilla jumped to the early lead in the first half. Tim Veloshin knocked a shot low into the net for the Warriors. Nasar Pavlus headed in a free kick from Kyle Broach to make it 2-0.
In the girls’ game, the Wasilla freshmen shined.
Freshman Abby Crawford netted a hat trick to lead Wasilla to a 7-0 girls’ win over Palmer. Another freshman, Alexis Friesen added a goal and an assist.
Ally Hull bagged two goals and two assists for the Warriors. Alia Donley also grabbed a goal.
Olivia Matson earned her first shutout in the Wasilla net.

Colony senior Peyton Johnstone scored six times to lead the Colony Knights to a 10-0 girls soccer win over Houston Monday at Colony High School.
Sahara Iverson scored twice for the Knights, who improved to 6-0-0 overall. Gabby Wakaliuk, Emily Link and Rina Inagaki also scored for Colony, which pumped 34 shots on the Houston net.
