Moose score conference wins over Houston, Kenai

The Palmer Moose scored a pair of conference victories during a three-day span.

The Moose skated past the Houston Hawks 4-3 Monday evening at the Big Lake Recreation Center. Palmer doubled up Kenai Central 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at the MTA Events Center in Palmer.

Carter Greco’s power play goal early in the second period proved to be the game-winner during the victory over the Hawks. Greco gave Palmer the 4-1 lead with 11:05 left in the middle frame.

Easton Armstrong, Alex Nelius and Jeremy Horacek all scored in the first for the Moose.

Houston jumped back into the game with a pair of goals late in the third. Brayden Johnson and Jade Rein-Gum each scored within a 43-second span to cut Palmer’s lead to 4-3. Eric Preboski also scored for Houston.

The teams combined for more than 70 shots in the game. Palmer goalie Jackson Heard made 34 saves. Houston netminder Josh Smoldon stopped 31 shots.

Palmer scored all four of its goals during the final two periods of the 4-2 win over Kenai. Zach Nelius scored twice. Horacek and Armstrong also scored. Palmer outshot Kenai 41-17.
