Moose score walk-off win

PALMER —The Palmer Moose capped their regular season with a walk-off.

James Nelson smacked a line drive over the shortstop in the bottom of the seventh, and a pair of runs scored to give the Moose a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over the rival Colony Knights Monday night at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer. Skyler Hale and Luke Guggenmos each scored on the Nelson single during Palmer’s six-run seventh.

“To make a comeback like that is always good. Hopefully we can feed off that and continue to play like that,” Palmer head coach Dave Combs said by cellphone.

Cade Holland and Alasdair McKechnie drew consecutive walks early in the inning. Anthony Jones also walked, and Caleb Engst singled to keep the inning going. Guggenmos also singled to help set up Nelson’s chance to drive in the game-tying and game-winning run.

“Everything kind of fell into place,” Combs said.

Engst drove in a game-high three RBI for the Moose, and Nelson and Guggenmos added two RBI each. Jones scored twice and was one of nine different Moose with at least one run scored. Nelson finished 3 for 4 at the plate in the win.

Palmer held 4-1 lead before Colony jumped ahead with a five-run fifth. The Knights added three in the top of the seventh and led 9-4 before Palmer’s final rally.

Cooper Smith and Zachary Satterly each finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI in the loss. Trace Severson added two hits and two runs.

Hawks edge Moose

Kolby Taylor pitched a complete game to lead the Houston Hawks to a 3-2 win over the Palmer Moose Saturday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

Taylor scattered four hits and one earned run over seven innings of work. He struck out two and walked two.

Palmer starter Anthony Jones allowed only three hits over six innings of work, but the Hawks were able to push three runs across the plate. Kendell Ruta, Reed Graham and Waylon Payne each scored for Houston.

Brady Shults was 3 for 3 at the plate in the loss for the Moose. Alasdair McKenchnie and Aaron Christiansen scored runs for the Moose.
