Moose sweep Hawks, Wolves in Showdown

PALMER - The Palmer Moose boys' and girls' basketball squads each quickly improved to 2-0 overall with a pair of wins in the 2005 Elks Showdown at Palmer HIgh School.

The Moose boys earned a 70-49 win over Houston on Thursday in the season-opener for both schools.

Nate Svedin and Quentin Fiscus each scored a game-high 14 points for the Moose.

Aaron Kohring and Trent Berberich each added eight.

Kaden Shumway scored 14 points to lead the Hawks, while Donovan Parker chipped in 13.

Houston took a 16-12 lead into the second quarter. But Palmer used a 21-8 run late in the first half to jump into the lead.

During that run J.J. Odom hit a pair of three-pointers for the Moose, and T.J. Fullmer added another shot from behind the arc.

On Friday, Kohring scored 15 points and Fullmer added 14 in a 65-46 win over Sitka.

Svedin added eight points.

Kory Hanson was the lone Sitka shooter to hit double digits. He scored 10.

In girls' action, Palmer allowed Houston to score in double digits in just one quarter, and the Moose rolled past Houston 58-31.

Adrian Thistle scored five of her seven points for the Hawks during a 17-point run in the second quarter. But the Moose out-scored Houston 30-11 in the final two quarters.

Mattie Cox led the Moose with 10 points. Nicole Kenney and Ashley Swetzof each added nine.

Swetzof scored a team-high 15 points in a 58-45 win over Sitka on Friday. Sarah Svedin scored 11 points, including eight in the fourth quarter.

Svedin's eight fourth-quarter points helped push the Moose to the win.

Palmer used a 26-11 run in the final eight minutes to clinch the win. Senior guard Leslie Berberich scored all of her eight points in the final period.
