VALDEZ — It’s been quite a while since Palmer scored the top trophy at a swimming and diving meet. But on Saturday the Moose ended the drought with a splash at the Valdez Invitational.
The Moose swept the boys and girls classes to finish with a meet-high 159 points in the combined team scores to win the Valdez Invitational in Valdez.
“This is the first trophy in quite a few years,” Palmer head coach Christine Morgan said. “They’re very excited.”
Morgan said she doesn’t think her athletes expected to have this much success at the four-team, two-day meet. But the head coach said she knew the Moose had the ability.
“They’ve been working really hard,” Morgan said. “They’ve really been determined.”
Determination coupled with the overall growth and improvement helped Palmer swimmers score first-place finishes in 16 different events over the weekend.
“Last year we had swimmers who could only swim the free and (backstroke). That was kind of a challenge,” Morgan said. “This year they’re really broadening their horizons.”
Palmer senior Spencer Bloom was named the boys most outstanding swimmer of the meet after winning four events. Bloom finished first in the 100-yard freestyle, 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke twice.
“He’s very determined,” Morgan said of Bloom.
Bloom helped the Palmer boys finish with 79 points in the meet.
A number of athletes on the Palmer girls squad also swam to first-place finishes.
Katie Stark was first in the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle. Stark also combined with Willow Schlenker, Sarah Hanson and Noelle Graham to win the 400 freestyle relay on Friday and Saturday.
Schlenker also won the 100 breaststroke, and Hanson was first in the 100 freestyle and 500 freestyle.
The Palmer girls finished with a meet-high 80 points.
“I knew they had the potential,” Morgan said of her girls squad.
Colony finished second overall, and second in the boys and girls classes.
Alex Kessler, Tristan Udomporn and Zane Mileuer finished first in two events each. Kessler won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Udomporn was victories in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Mileuer won the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.
Rachel Crosley finished first in the 500 freestyle to help lead the Knights to a runner-up finish in the girls’ class.
PHS hosting swim meet
Palmer High is hosting the annual Palmer Invitational this weekend, a meet expected to be a preview of the upcoming Region III Championships.
The Palmer Invite will feature all three Valley teams — Palmer, Wasilla and Colony — in addition to a variety of programs from Kodiak, Homer and the Kenai-Soldotna area.
The meet begins Thursday with the diving preliminaries. The swimming preliminaries are scheduled for Friday.
The final events are slated for Saturday.
