Moose sweep Wasilla Invitational

PALMER — Palmer High School, with the help of its strong girls’ team, edged Colony High School Thursday to win the Wasilla Invitational at the Palmer Pool.

The meet was attended by the three Mat-Su Valley teams, and Kenai Central High School. Kenai won the boys category at 29 points ahead of Colony but came in third overall behind Palmer and Colony with their combined scores.

Alexis Mattson was one standout swimmer at the meet, with wins in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, beating out Palmer High’s Gretchen Snelders, who placed a close second in both those races.

“The way my coach told me to look at it was like our threshold set, which is basically where we do just 15 50s of sprinting, and it definitely felt like that, and I just tried to carry out my stroke with the best technique I could,” said Mattson of the back half of her 200 IM.

Colony coach Patrick Penoyar has been working his new group of swimmers hard this season but has found both his efforts and theirs to be paying off.

“The plasticity of children. The gains we’re making are faster than anything I’ve ever seen before,” he said.

Senior Jayde Chan, a Wasilla diver and silver medalist at the 2017 state championships, won the girls 1-meter diving with 206.30 points against her Palmer High School rival and state champion from last year, Chloe Hartman. Eli Krozel of Colony took home first in the boys diving with 201.20 points.

Elysse Russell, a newcomer to Palmer High, is looking to become their standout freestyle sprinter and won the 50 free with a time of 26.29 and the 100 backstroke with 1:07.51. Russell, who is in her senior year, is wasting no time in pursuing her goals for the season and plans to attend an out-of-state college after graduation.

“I really want to break a couple records, hopefully, and state champion would be nice,” she said.

Phoenyx Collier, part of the varsity boys team for Palmer, has moved from being a strong distance swimmer to a well-rounded sprinter in the time since his freshman year, according to his coach Christine Morgan. Collier was out-touched in the 50 freestyle but made it a close race for Kenai swimmer Sorin Sorenson who came in first in a flat 25 seconds.

Wasilla boys haven’t had a chance to compete in any relays yet this season due to intelligibility and a small men's team. However, coach Hadley Remele plans to enter them into next week’s meet in Homer.

“So we should have all four boys finally next weekend so that we can enter in some relays.”

The Wasilla Invite has been held the past three years at the Palmer and was started in order to add an additional invite to the Valley.

“Unfortunately we’ve never been able to host them over at the Wasilla pool because we didn’t even have six blocks that worked and it’s not even a legal 25 [yard] pool,” she said.

Once the renovations are done at the Wasilla facility, Remele looks forward to hosting meets there in the future.
