Moose swimmer enjoys solid day at state meet

ANCHORAGE — Palmer’s Katie Stark enjoyed a strong afternoon in the pool Saturday, posting a pair of top-4 finishes during the final round of the ASAA/First National Bank State Swimming Championships at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.

Stark led all Valley swimmers with a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 53.53 seconds, which is a new school record.

She finished fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.93.

Stark improved on her preliminary round times in both events. She finished with a time of 25.01 in the 50 and 54.17 in the 100 on Friday.

Her times were also better than the marks she recorded during the Region III Championships last week in Homer. Stark finished third in the region with a time of 25.16 in the 50, and third in Region III with a mark of 54.79 in the 100.

Saturday, Stark also helped lead Palmer to a pair of top-6 finishes in the relay events. Stark, Naomi Graham, Sarah Hanson and Noelle Graham combined to finish fourth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:43.55. The same squad of four finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:46.59.

Both times in the relays are new school records.

Stark’s work in the individual and relay events helped Palmer finish with 35 points in the team standings, good enough for sixth in the 20-team field.

Noelle Graham and Naomi Graham also placed in individual events. Noelle Graham was fifth in the 100 butterfly, while Naomi Graham finished sixth in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 freestyle.

Noelle Graham was the Region III champion in the 100 butterfly.

Alex Kessler led the Colony boys to a 13th-place finish in the team standings by placing in two events. Kessler, the Region III champion in the 100 breaststroke, finished fourth in that event at the state meet. He was also sixth in the 200 freestyle.
