More than 100 compete state triathlon championships in Knik

KNIK — Alaska endurance athletes put themselves through the state’s ultimate test Sunday. More than 100 competed in the Northern Trust State Triathlon Championship in Knik.

Anchorage’s Jens Beck was the top athlete in the event, which featured a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilomter bike ride and 10-K run. Beck finished the grueling trifecta in 1 hour and 54 minutes, about eight minutes faster than Andrew Duenow.

Shannon Dooley won the women’s class, with a time of 2:10.

The event was designed to give triathletes a longer alternative to the various sprint races hosted in the state, according to information posted on the race website. It’s also patterned after Olympic-distance competitions.

Triathltes started with a 1,500-meter swim in Knik Lake before embarking on the 40-K bike ride down Knik-Goose Bay and Point MacKenzie roads. The run leads athletes back up Knik Goose-Bay to Knik Lake.
