Morning earthquake wakes residents

Residents throughout the Mat-Su Valley received a jolt of wakeup call on Monday morning when a magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook the Mat-Su and Anchorage area.

Initially estimated to be a magnitude 4.7 earthquake, it was later downgraded to 4.6. Residents from Valdez to Trapper Creek reported feeling the morning jolt. There have been no reports of damage or injuries.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was at 6:47 a.m. about 2 miles southwest of Eagle River. Preliminary data put the earthquake at about 15 miles deep, which was later revised to 17.5 miles deep.

No tsunami warning was issued, according to the National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning System.
