WASILLA — School was cancelled at most Mat-Su Borough School District schools on Thursday due to icy roads. The only schools open were Glacier View, Susitna Valley, Trapper Creek and Talkeetna.
Light, freezing rain was falling Thursday morning in parts of Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley. However, widespread icing did not materialize.
By mid-morning, most roads around the Valley appeared to be in good shape, but district spokesperson Catherine Esary said the decision to close schools — which was made at around 5:30 a.m. — was made out of an abundance of caution.
"To keep children safe is our primary concern," Esary said.
She said there were icy patches on roads in Palmer and Wasilla, and weather reports were calling for possible freezing rain.
She said the decision to call off school is never an easy one to make.
"It's always a struggle, but unsafe conditions are also a struggle," she said.
