As a resident of Palmer and a retired military NCO [non-commissioned officer], I would like to respond to the June 27 article in the ADN regarding Palmer acquiring motorcycles from Anchorage Police Department to sa ve money on fuel. BAD IDEA! Palmer is being penny wise and pound foolish.
Anchorage has an extensive highway system and dedicates a portion of its police force exclusively to traffic enforcement. If it cannot justify a machine usable for only four to five months a year, how can Palmer believe it can make it work? The article cited saving the cost of a new vehicle, but the officers will still need a vehicle for the other two-thirds of the year and for inclement weather. Palmer officers are required to respond to all situations at a moment’s notice, not just traffic. If they do not have their tactical equipment with them (there are no trunks on a motorcycle) what good is the equipment or possibly the officer?
Palmer has one of the best police forces I have had the privilege of knowing. Let’s not destroy an outstanding work force in the belief we are saving a nickel. Some of the council obviously agrees with me. If we truly desire to save, I suggest we eliminate an administrative position. How about a lieutenant with poor fiscal/managerial judgment?
