MAT-SU -- On Monday evening, Sept. 6, a motorcyclist was killed in a head-on collision with a pickup truck on mile 239 of the Richardson Highway, Alaska State Troopers reported.
Kenneth Handy, 37, of Fort Greely, was headed north on a 2000 Yamaha YZF-R6 motorcycle when he crossed over the center line and hit a 1988 Ford half-ton pickup, driven by William Elliot, 43, of Palmer. Elliot's family -- Linda Elliot, 44, Logan, 12, and Drew, 15 -- was in the truck with him. The Elliots all reported to be wearing seat belts and sustained no injuries, according to troopers.
The collision caused the motorcycle to be pinned under the truck and both vehicles quickly burst into flames. The Elliots escaped from their burning vehicle and attempted to free Handy from the wreckage, but were unable to get him out.
The initial impact of the collision destroyed the motorcycle and caused heavy damage to the pickup, and the ensuing fire completely destroyed both vehicles.
According to the trooper report, Handy was wearing a helmet and protective leather gear at the time of the collision. Troopers do not believe alcohol was involved, although toxicology tests are pending. Excess speed, however, is believed to have been a factor in the collision.
The State Medical Examiner's Office released the body to the Fairbanks Funeral Home.
