In nearly every neighborhood, they are there. A derelict or junk car. They have their stories to tell. Maybe the owner has moved on, or perhaps all the parts that could be utilized have been taken. Perhaps, tragically, the car was stolen or the driver did not have the insurance or funding necessary to remove the vehicle from its automotive cocoon.

While there are a myriad of reasons, the junk cars remain. Now, the Mat-Su Borough (MSB) has rolled out a new program to help remove junk vehicles.

The Junk Car Removal Program is the brainchild of MSB Assembly member Dmitri Fonov, who presented the idea after several residents had complained about the number of derelict vehicles and property in neighborhoods across the Mat-Su Valley.

There are some important things to remember:

The program is a reimbursement program that will provide up to $200 per vehicle to a hauler for removing a junk vehicle from private property. This applies to passenger vehicles and/or pickup trucks that do not exceed 15,000 lbs.

The program allows for up to 3 vehicles per parcel, per fiscal year to be removed, as the budget allows and is non-transferable.

Vehicle must be free of debris and garbage.

For people wanting to begin the process to remove a junk vehicle from their property, a request can be made by any Borough resident. Residents must complete the form and submit it to one of the two authorized contractors for removal.

Contact an authorized contractor to arrange junk vehicle removal.

One thing residents must remember is that they will be responsible for any towing any agreed costs over $200, and that any additional costs for towing may be charged by the contractor depending on location.

If you are in need to have a vehicle removed, read the flyer for more information, follow the link, or use the QR code, and fill out the form to get started.

This program will continue through June 30, 2024 or until funding is depleted.
