Congratulations to McKenna Goodie, Mariah Fry, Amber Swanson and Shannon Powers, Pioneer Peak Elementary School, this week’s Mat-Su Borough School District Students of the Week. These girls took first place in the fifth- and sixth-grade Battle of the Books competition. Librarian Yvonne Brooke coached the team.

Alaska Association of School Librarians coordinates Battle of the Books in Alaska.

According to that group, the idea for a Battle of the Books came from a radio program sponsored by Chicago Public Library in the early 1940s. Many years later, another Chicago area school librarian, Roslyn Goodman, found her way to Kodiak and brought the Battle of the Books idea with her.

The district is heavily involved in Battle of the Books, and each year students represent the district in the state championship. This year, Su Valley Jr./Sr. High School took second place in the high school division. Palmer Junior Middle School took second place in the middle school division and Butte Elementary took third place in the third- and fourth-grade group. Congratulations to the Pioneer Peak Elementary third- and fourth-grade team. Daniel Molina is Principal.

Superintendent Dr. Deena M. Paramo and the entire Mat-Su Borough School District say, “Congratulations, Pioneer Peak readers. Great job.”
