Construction on the Muldoon Gate continues on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Aug, 21, 2024. Additions to the gate include a canopy designed to protect gate personnel from inclement weather conditions, and raised speed tables to improve safety and quality of life for security forces, military police and patrons. The Muldoon Gate on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson will reopen on Sept. 4, pending final inspections.

Muldoon Gate was closed in late July due to the construction and installation of a steel canopy. Muldoon Gate is one of two gates on the base without a cover for the personnel who staff the entrances. The canopy helps protect those manning the gate from harsh weather, especially as winter starts to creep around the corner.

Besides the construction of the new canopy, new concrete speed tables were added to the gate to assist with traffic, and the roundabout located just inside the gate was modified.

Those using the roundabout will find the traffic patterns slightly changed to help reduce potential collisions when driving in and leaving the roundabout.

“We anticipate the JBER community, retirees and veterans will be pleased to have overhead coverage while being processed through the gate during inclement weather. Not only does the canopy help protect our airmen from the elements, but it will also mitigate rain and snow falling on the driver or entering their vehicle during the security check,” said JBER Spokesperson Erin Eaton.

Muldoon Gate is located centrally on the base, right by the base hospital, Commissary and Main Exchange. Popular stores like the Costco Business Center, Target and Lowes are right outside the gate. Bartlett High School, one of the high schools zoned for students living on base, is also right outside Muldoon Gate.

Pending the completion of final inspections, Muldoon Gate is scheduled to resume regular operating hours on Wednesday, September 4th. The gate typically operates from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.

Commercial trucks up to 15 feet high can exit the base via the Muldoon Gate.

According to the 673d Civil Engineering Squadron, no additional construction projects are planned for the Muldoon Gate or any other JBER gates.
