Ask most Alaskans and they will tell you that Alaska has two seasons-winter and road construction, and it is in full swing in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough with several ongoing projects to update.
First up, the exit ramp from the Parks Highway to the Glenn Highway (from Wasilla toward Palmer) will be closed this weekend from 8 p.m. on Friday, July 12 through 6 a.m. on Monday, July 15. To detour around the closure, continue on the Glenn Highway toward Anchorage, exit at Knik River Access, and re-enter the highway heading north.
This closure is part of the ongoing Glenn Highway-Parks Highway to South Inner Springer Loop (Phase II) project, which aims to reduce congestion and improve safety by reconstructing this portion of the Glenn Highway into a 4-lane, divided highway with a new separated multi-use path. You can learn more about the project at www.arcg.is/15n9L50
Another major road construction project under the Department of Transportation (DOT), in cooperation with Granite Construction Company, is on the Knik-Goose Bay Phase I project between the Palmer-Wasilla Extension and Donovan Drive.
On Wednesday, July 10 starting at 8 p.m., South Fern Street will be closed at Knik-Goose Bay Road. The closure will remain in effect until Thursday, July 25 at 6 a.m.
Traffic will be detoured via Edlund Road and Weeping Birch Street. Local business access will be maintained via a direct access driveway to Knik-Goose Bay Road. Drivers are asked to please be alert to the change in traffic pattern at this location.
On West Lakes Boulevard, from the intersection of Beaver Lake road to approximately mile 1.7 will be restricted due to construction began on July 8. This is part of a West Lakes Blvd reconstruction project, encompassing clearing, grubbing, excavation work, culvert replacement and stream realignment.
This project is expected to be completed summer of 2025.
Rounding out the road construction projects is over on Settler Bay Drive at Cotter Creek. Construction activities here are related to a fish passage improvement project meant to replace the existing culvert and broken fish latter. Access to the community will be provided through Bogle Bluff Drive while the road remains closed. This also began July 8 and is expected to be finished on or about August 10, 2025.
