WASILLA — Derryk Snell has spent his senior season running around, through and by opponents. Saturday, Snell took his talents to Wasilla High School.
And it was much of the same for the Chugiak standout. Snell scored four times to lead the Mustangs to a 42-6 Railbelt Conference win over the Warriors at Veterans Memorial Field.
Snell, who now has 27 total touchdowns in seven games this season, needed only 12 touches to notch four touchdowns. Snell carried the ball eight times for 50 yards and three scores. He added four catches for 58 yards, which included a 25-yard touchdown catch. Snell could have had a fifth score, a 75-yard punt return for a score, that was called back due to a penalty, If that wasn’t enough, Snell also blocked a Wasilla field goal attempt.
Senior quarterback Hunter Harr tossed a pair of touchdown passes to help the Mustangs improve to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Railbelt Conference. Chugiak and Colony (7-0, 3-0) have clinched home field advantage during the first round of the ASAA Division I playoffs. The conference title will be decided when the Mustangs host the Knights Thursday at 7 p.m. at Chugiak.
Austin Harr also had a 10-yard touchdown run for Chugiak.
Senior quarterback Aeron Milliron scored Wasilla’s lone touchdown, a 56-yard run during the final seconds of the game. Milliron, flushed out of the pocket, broke multiple tackles as he hit the right sideline before cutting back to the middle of the field en route to the long score.
The Warriors, who have lost three straight, were held to 123 yards of total offense. Wasilla dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in Railbelt play. Wasilla is still alive in the race for the Railbelt’s final two playoff berths. Wasilla sits in fourth place in the conference, just behind Lathrop (1-2) and just ahead of West Valley (0-3). Lathrop plays West Valley next week. With a Lathrop win over West Valley, Wasilla would clinch the final spot in the Railbelt. With a West Valley, there would be a three-way tie and a series of tiebreakers would be needed to separate Lathrop, Wasilla and West Valley.
Wasilla caps its regular season with a nonconference game against Palmer in the annual Potato Bowl, Friday at 7 p.m. at Palmer High School.
