WASILLA — MyHouse Mat-Su Homeless Youth Center recently held its annual Radiothon fundraising event Friday, Nov. 3 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 11th annual fundraiser was broadcasted over the radio thanks to Eddie Maxwell with Q 99.7 (KMBQ-FM). Overstreet praised Maxwell for being an integral part of the event all these years.
"He does an absolutely amazing job," Overstreet said.
Listeners were prompted to make pledges and support local grassroots efforts supporting local youth, fighting for human trafficking survivors, and other philanthropic efforts in the community.
According to Overstreet, they've raised upwards of $30,000 during past events. She noted that they didn't raise as much as they normally do this year, but they still had a great amount of participation and raised a lot of awareness for their cause.
"It went well. It was a great day. We had such a good response from the community. It was really fun," Overstreet said.
Various guests from across the state talked to MyHouse Executive Director Michelle Overstreet, Podcast Producer and Communication Director Isaac Smoldon about important topics related to the non-profit’s mission throughout the day.
It was also an opportunity for MyHouse staff members and volunteers to discuss the organization's programs, and it was a chance for clients to share their stories reclaiming their lives through the various services available throughout the year.
Governor Mike Dunleavy, representativeCathy Tilton, representative Shelley Hughes, and other notable guests made appearances during this year's event.
"They have a lot of good things in the works," Overstreet said. "I think it was our best one ever."
Overstreet thanked all their guests, everyone who tuned in and made donations. She said it was a great example of locals helping locals.
"There's just nothing like it. It's just a tremendous blessing to broadcast that out," Overstreet said. "We're a hometown organization and were overjoyed by the support we have for our community.
MyHouse offers various wrap-around services supporting local homeless and at-risk youth such as case management, job training, housing, and other resources.
