NAHL: Dogs need OT to slip by Avs

FAIRBANKS — Despite Alaska goaltender Nathan Corey’s career day, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs managed to edge the Avs 2-1 in overtime at the Big Dipper Ice Arena in Fairbanks on Friday.

Corey stopped 55 of the first 56 shots he faced in just more than 62 minutes worth of hockey. But 2 minutes and 49 seconds into overtime, Austin Block slipped the puck by the Alaska netminder to give the Dogs the win over their rival.

Corey, in his first season at the Junior A level, stopped a career-high 55 shots in the loss. The 57 shots he faced were also a career high. It was also the fourth time this season that Corey, a former South Anchorage High School star, recorded 45 saves or more.

After Arthur Bidwill gave the Ice Dogs the 1-0 lead early in the second period, Alaska forward Kyle Pichler — another former South standout — tied the game for the Avs.

In an all-Anchorage scoring line, Anchorage natives Alex Young and Tyler Currier grabbed assists.

Young set up the play by putting a shot on the Ice Dogs net. After Fairbanks goalie Cody Reichard made the initial save, Pichler crashed the net and knocked in the rebound.
