PALMER – Hatcher Alpine Xperience (HAX) is revealing the new name for the alpine recreation area at mile 10.6 on N. Palmer-Fishhook Road. The organization has made great headway in the last two years towards bringing a lift-served ski area to the Mat-Su Valley. This event marks another milestone toward that goal.
HAX solicited name ideas from the community in November and December, 2017. The more than 400 names were narrowed down to four options by the HAX Board of Directors in late December. HAX members were given one month to vote on the new name from the final four: Fishhook, Pinnacle, Ptarmigan and Skeetawk. Saturday’s event will include sledding, skiing hot cocoa and hot dogs at the area which is groomed regularly and open on the weekends.
HAX is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven community group working to build and operate a ski area with chair lift access in Hatcher Pass. The organization has entered into a management agreement with the Mat-Su Borough to operate a ski area at mile 10.6 on N. Palmer-Fishhook Rd. The development is entirely dependent upon community support including volunteer work and donations.
Currently the project is in Phase 1a which includes a 2,400 sq. ft. maintenance shed to house the volunteer’s snowcat, approximately six miles of trail clearing, temporary warming facilities and a beginner (triple) chair lift. The next phase will include a parking lot and access road updates, a day lodge and high-speed quad lift.
