PALMER — Nearly 200 competed in the 11th annual Government Peak Hill Climb Saturday at the Government Peak Recreation Area near Palmer.
Erik Johnson was the overall winner, finishing the 3-mile course, which features 3,500 feet of vertical gain, in 48 minutes. Johnson finished more than a minute ahead of runner-up Jim Shine (49:09). Matt Novakovich (49:48) finished third and also broke the 50-minute mark. Matias Saari (50:56) was fourth and Jack Novak (51:08) finished fifth.
Rosie Frankowski finished first in the women’s class, clocking a mark of 53:30. Frankowski was also ninth overall. Marine Dusser was the runner-up among the women, with a time of 56:41. Briana Sullivan (57:53), Sheryl Loan (58:27) and Julianne Dickerson (59:13) rounded out the top 5.
Dusser entered the race as the defending champions.
The Government Peak Hill Climb is part of the Alaska Mountain Runners Grad Prix. The next event, the Robert Spurr Memorial Climb at Bird Ridge, is June 17.
