Nearly 300 brave the 5th annual Crazy Lazy Mountain Race

PALMER — It seems to take a certain kind of crazy to run up and down Lazy Mountain in an hour. A mass of enthusiastic racers rose to the occasion at the fifth annual Crazy Lazy Mountain Race, a 3,000-foot vertical climb that’s regarded by many as the inaugural kick-off to the mountain running season.

“It feels like the first day of spring,” Kenny Brewer, who placed fourth, said.

Dane Crowley, co-founder and race director, said he was pleased by this year’s turn out, adding that it was on par for what they were looking for. A total of 245 people, including a handful of children, ran the full race and 15 racers ran the youth race, according to Crowley.

He said that it was a “very competitive” race this year with a lot of serious competitors at each other’s heels. He said first place wins entry to the annual Mount Marathon race in Seward and gets a bundle of items provided by sponsors.

“People aren’t here for the prizes, they’re here for the fun,” Crowley said.

Lars Arneson won this year’s race, coming in at 1 hour, 7 minutes, 14.9 seconds. His face was beet red and dripping with sweat. He said the up and downhill trek was “brutal” and was very sloshy.

“It was juicy. Everything’s all saturated,” Arneson said.

This was Arneson’s second time running the Crazy Lazy. He said that he tries to run every day for training but the slosh was the main obstacle.

“You can’t train for that slosh,” Arneson said.

Brewer said this was his fourth time participating. He said that he was the second racer to the top of the mountain but he lost his momentum going downhill. He said the wet, muddy and snowy conditions caused just about everyone to tumble a few times, himself included. He said that’s part of the Crazy Lazy experience since it takes place in early spring.

“You never know what it’s gonna be,” Brewer said.

Brewer said that the fact he was second to the top was “good sign” for the rest of his mountain running season. He said that he plans to start working on his quads for the next race.

“I’m happy to run a mountain but I’m a little hesitant to get back down it but that’s obviously what my legs need,” Brewer said with a laugh.

Like many people there, Brewer was thankful for the favorable weather conditions. The sun beat down with little to no wind so many racers like Brewer were comfortable not needing winter gear to run. He said this race not only kicks off the season but is also a sure way to run into many familiar faces emerging from the winter.

“It’s the first time you get to see everyone again. It’s a pretty tight knit community,” Brewer said.

Denali Strabel was the first of the 103 women in the race to finish, clocking a title of 1:17:53.9. Strabel was 15th overall.

Arneson finished a less than a minute ahead of runner-up Lyon Kopsack. Matias Saari, Brewer and Ben Marvin rounded out the top 5.
