WASILLA — Colony High School played host to the Tri-Valley Wrestling Club’s freestyle/Greco Roman tournament Friday and Saturday. More than a dozen teams representing the Mat-Su Valley, Fairbanks, Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula and Valdez competed in the tournament, which featured nearly 300 competitors.
Mat-Su wrestlers fared quite well, taking home 28 individual titles in the two-day event, which included age groups ranging from pre-bantam (5-6-year-olds) to juniors (high-schoolers, 17 and over).
The host Tri-Valley Wrestling Club earned a meet-high 20 individual titles, getting wins from pre-bantams Jared Hopkins (40 pounds), Vincent Cramer (45) and Lane Booth (50); bantams Austin Edwards (45), Levi Hopkins (55B) and Eric Christy (60A); novices Daniel Dahms (65) and Matthew Vandemartin (75); midget B Chace Booth (103); novice B’s Joey Bernowski (85) and Chance Boatman (95); schoolboy/girls Gabe Loggins (112), Luke Faulkner (128) and Quace Wright (210); Cadets Charles Coisman (119), Sam Loggins (140), Ryan Knutson (152), Joseph Fujimoto (160) and Renn Wright (285); and junior Dan Gregory (145).
The Mid-Valley Wrestling Club got seven individual winners, including victories by pre-bantam Bryce Thompson (60); bantam Micah Mathis (50); midget Jarod Ruffing (80); novice B’s Jedediah Diederich (90) and Mitchell Daigle (140+); cadet Jeremy White (189) and open class 189-pounder Daniel Graham.
The Mat-Su Matmen got one individual titleist, picking up a win by novice B Hunter Molesky at 105 pounds.
The meet was the second of four freestyle/Greco Roman meets scheduled in the Valley this year. Next weekend, Houston’s North Star Wrestling Club will host a meet at Houston High School. On May 9 and 10, the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex will host the state meet, which this year will feature the first-ever girls’ freestyle/Greco Roman state championships.
