Neighbors help make Christmas special

This is a story about the generous and loving help shown to me and my family by Crystal Carson and her family.

The Carsons epitomize the true spirit of Alaska. Crystal gives freely of her time and supports all her friends in need.

Throughout the year she collects and distributes food to three families I know of with small children who may have gone hungry without her generosity. She uses her own meager wages to purchase toys, gifts and clothing for these families as well.

Her sister, Debbie, also donates plenty of time and love to those in need. Many people owe their spirit of giving to these remarkable sisters.

When my family arrived in Wasilla Sept. 3, we had suffered great trauma.

I had several grand mal seizures while my husband drove the Alcan. His incredible patience saved the day as he calmed our 8-year-old daughter, got emergency assistance for me and calmed our dog and two cats enough to get us here. Our destination was the Carson Farm in Wasilla.

Twenty years ago, my best friend Crystal and I graduated from Bartlett High School and headed south to Seattle, where Debbie was living.

We all got busy with our lives but always stayed in touch. By the time I was ready to return to Alaska, the sisters had already reestablished themselves in Wasilla.

We had used all our savings and credit cards to pay medical costs and automotive expenses, yet Crystal welcomed us to stay in her small house, fed us and helped us get back on our feet.

Debbie's generosity helped us get our own home, provided my husband and me with part-time work and helped with my medical expenses.

It turns out my seizures were caused by two lesions on my brain. Doctors are still studying test results to determine the seriousness of this problem.

We would not have had any Christmas without their help, and their continued friendship helps me get through every day.
