PALMER — Three-tenths of a second was enough to get Scott Patterson a course record.
Patterson edged runner-up Erik Bjornsen by the slimmest of margins to win the Government Peak Climb and set the course record during the race June 3 near Palmer.
Patterson finished the 3-mile course, which features 3,500 feet of vertical gain, in 42 minutes, 4.9 seconds, a step ahead of Bjornsen, who posted an official time of 42:05. It marks the second straight year that the course record has been broken. Last year, Jim Shine set a record with his time of 43:29. That beat the old mark of 44:20 set by Eric Strabel in 2014.
Russ Johanson (48:42), Jerome Ross (49:44) and Peter Mamorl (50:24) rounded out the men’s top 5.
In the women’s class, Marine Dusser edged the defending women’s champion to finish first in her class. Dusser notched a time of 53:53. Najeeby Quinn, who set the women’s course record with a time of 52:21 in 2016, finished second this year with a time of 56:22. Sheryl Loan (57:19), Nancy Pease (59:10) and Sarah Glaser (59:33) rounded out the women’s top 5.
The annual Government Peak Climb is part of the Alaska Mountain Runners Grand Prix. The next event is the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb, slated for June 18 at Bird Ridge.
