PALMER – The Mat-Su Borough School District has decided on a name for the new elementary school it plans to open in the fall.
The school, located off Nelson Road in the Ranch subdivision, has been the subject of lively debate of late as the borough worries about how to access the site without negatively impacting nearby homeowners. The school has capacity for 470 students and cost $1.4 million to complete.
On Wednesday, the school board chose to name the school the Fred and Sara Machetanz Elementary School.
The Machetanzes were local artists who wrote children’s books and participated in Disney movies about Alaska, according to a school district press release.
