New wolf exhibit opening in Anchorage

What is the history of the interaction between wolves and humans? How have wolves been viewed by people? How might we be viewed by wolves? Answers to those questions can be found at a new museum exhibit opening as part of National Wolf Awareness Week, which begins Oct. 19.

Wolf Song of Alaska recently announced its newest museum exhibit, "Humans and Wolves: A Multicultural Perspective," which will be on display beginning Oct. 19 at the corner of 6th Avenue and C Street in Anchorage.

From ancient to modern times humans have been fascinated, and often simultaneously frightened, by images of wolves. This new exhibit examines the influence and symbolism of wolves in human history, mythology, and the arts. Included are examples of early religious teachings "demonizing" the wolf, children's stories such as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Three Little Pigs," and the emergence of the scientific interest in the wolf in popular culture, movies and books.

The display was researched, written and constructed by Wolf Song Education Coordinator Edwin Wollert, with design assistance by Artistic Coordinator Maria Talasz.

The exhibit will debut as a part of Wolf Song's celebration of National Wolf Awareness Week, Oct. 13-19. There also will be special programs on the red wolf and gray on Saturday afternoon, and museum admission will be half-price for the day.

Half-price admission to the museum will be $2 for adults and $1 for children ages 6 to 18. A Wolf Awareness Week 2002 poster will be given away with each paid admission, while supplies last.

Wolf Song of Alaska is located at the corner of 6th Ave. and C St. in downtown Anchorage. Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
