Mat-Su assemblyman resigns

Mat-Su Borough Assembly member Robert Yundt has resigned from the assembly, citing a decision to move outside the borough’s Assembly District 4, which includes the greater Wasilla area. Yundt notified by borough by email.

His position is now shown as “vacant” on the borough’s website.

Yundt is a homebuilder in the Mat-Su region who has a long history of championing conservative legislation on the borough assembly including term limits for the mayor and assembly and a constant push for lower property tax mill rates, which are now the lowest in 30 years. He is now also in a tight race for a state Senate seat now held by Sen. David Wilson, Both are Republican.

Yundt was issued a $107,000 fine by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for unauthorized dumping of soil and other materials into Wasilla Lake. He ultimately agreed to pay a $77,000 fine.

The vacancy will officially take effect once the Assembly declares the seat vacant, according to borough officials, which is scheduled for September 10. The body will vote on the Resolution being brought forward and determine the next steps.
