MAT-SU — Mat-Su Regional Medical Center is once again providing care for over 40 COVID-19 patients as Alaska’s case rate of 1,161.75 remains the highest of any state at any time during the coronavirus pandemic. There were 148 new cases in the Mat-Su Borough reported on Thursday among the 1,234 new cases reported across Alaska. The Mat-Su has now had a total of 17,844 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic last march.
There have now been 556 Alaskans who have died from COVID-19 and 203 are currently hospitalized with COVID. Across Alaska’s hospitals, 20.2 % of all hospitalized persons are suffering symptoms of COVID-19 and 36 require ventilators. There are just 16 Intensive Care Unit beds available.
The Mat-Su case rate of 1,574 is significantly higher than the state case rate and among the highest case rate of any county or borough in the entire United States. At Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, 40.6 % of the hospitalized persons are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and there are no ICU beds available at MSRMC. Of the 148 new cases reported on Thursday, 93 were from the five zip codes that are attributed to Wasilla and 41 were reported in Palmer.
Statewide, 60.3 % of Alaska residents have been fully vaccinated while another 17,804 await their second dose of vaccine. In the Mat-Su, 41.8 % of residents are fully vaccinated while 46.1 % have received at least one dose, leaving 3,758 awaiting their second dose of vaccine.
