WASILLA — A local cancer support group, Just Us Girls Support, commonly referred to as J.U.G.S. for short, is gearing up for a major fundraising event designed to raise money for their cause while bringing local artists, vendors, and community members together for a new summer music festival at the Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer.

J.U.G.S. founder Lynn Nordland recently participated in a question and answer interview to discuss the upcoming event.

Q: What can you tell me about Heliofest?“Our huge gala that we do for the nonprofit is every February, but because of COVID, we couldn’t do it. So we decided to do a summer project… It’s just combining a huge menagerie of local musical artists, crafters, and food vendors. We are so excited for this.”

Q: What can you tell me about the musical lineup?“Ken Peltier is gonna be there, which I am so excited about. I’ve never met him. I’ve been to several of his concerts. I think he’s an outstanding person in the community. He’s also a cancer survivor… There’s several acts lined up. We call it ‘music with a purpose.’”

Q: Will there be a J.U.G.S. booth at the event?“We will be having a booth. We’re gonna have some raffles. We’re gonna have some silent auctions. We’re gonna have a donation area, just some information about J.U.G.S. and what we do.”

Q: How are things going with J.U.G.S. in general?“Because of COVID, it’s been a huge travesty for the whole nation, for everybody. J.U.G.S. has been hit by that.”

Q: What are some of your long-term goals for the group?“We’re looking to maybe another J.U.G.S. nonprofit for guys, called Just Us Guys Support, which is kinda cool. At one point in time, we’d also like to add pediatric cancer support too. We’ve got just as many children out there that need help as adults.”

Heliofest takes place July 10 at the Palmer Fairgrounds. It’s an all-day event and all the proceeds go to J.U.G.S. to support the nonprofit’s efforts throughout the year.

There are still openings for vendors and event sponsors. For more information, call 907-854-5847, email jugsatmatsu@gmail.com, or visit the official event page at facebook.com/Heliofest.
