Six Mat-Su schools will reopen Thursday, Jan. 6, while others remain closed due to continued problems related to the winter storm that hit the region last weekend.

“Due to prolonged power outages and cold temperatures experienced throughout the week, the Matanuska Valley School District continues its emergency response to numerous maintenance issues including domestic water line breaks, fire suppression/sprinkler systems, boiler failures, and complications from flooding,” school officials said in a statement Wednesday.

All but six schools will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 6 and Friday, Jan. 7. Additionally, school staff availability is complicating re-openings, as well as a lack of bus drivers and attendants for First Student, the school district’s major transportation provider.

“For these reasons, the District is not offering remote learning. Options for making up school days later in the year are under consideration,” the statement said

The following schools are open and have full transportation services on Thursday, Jan. 6:

• .Glacier View School

• Sutton Elementary

• Su Valley Jr/Sr High School

• Trapper Creek Elementary

• Talkeetna Elementary

• Willow Elementary

“If your school is open tomorrow, please drive carefully and allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Take caution in areas that may not have adequate lighting or traffic signals and be prepared for slick driving conditions throughout the Valley,” the school district said in a statement.

“It is strongly recommended that staff & students wear ice cleats if they have them. Grab n’ Go Meals will be available from 10:30 am to 12:30pm on Thursday and Friday for any families with school age children at the following locations:

• Colony Middle School

• Houston Jr/Sr High School

• Palmer Jr Middle School

• Redington Jr/Sr High School

• Teeland Middle School

• Wasilla Middle School

The school district is working towards having all schools open Monday, Jan. 10th, the district said. An update will be provided Friday evening, Jan. 7th.
