WASILLA — Wasilla Area Seniors is hosting the annual Miles for Meals on Wheels 5K Run, Walk, and Roll event Saturday, June 25.
“Come celebrate with us. It’s a fun time,” WASI Assistant Executive Director Marlene Munsell said.
Those interested in supporting WASI’s mission to provide meals to local seniors can do what the event title says and run, walk, or roll through a 5K race. Participants can use wheels or their own two feet throughout this event. A community barbecue with hot dogs and hamburgers takes place after the 5K.
This annual fundraising event is free to attend, but donations are encouraged. Funds raised go toward WASI’s Meals on Wheels program that serves seniors across the community.
“My favorite thing is to see seniors come out of their apartments and cheer people as they come by,” Munsell said.
This event is WASI’s largest fundraiser of the year, according to Munsell. She said it started over three decades ago and it’s built up a strong following with a lot of community support over the years.
“Everyone in the community is supporting us in a different way. We appreciate our community. We feel the community’s love at each event that we do,” Munsell said.
With the overall demand for meal services rising, Munsell said this fundraiser is more important than ever before. She said that providing the best quality of life for local seniors is their highest priority, and having access to wholesome meals is a vital part of that.
“We want to make sure that we are there for them,” Munsell said. “This event allows us to help more seniors. To me, that’s very rewarding.”
Check-in for the event starts at 9 a.m. with the first wave of racers starting at 10 a.m. Munsell encourages anyone who isn’t able to attend the event in-person to donate online.
“There’s a lot of stuff happening in town so we appreciate anyone that comes over and is supportive,” Munsell said.
