No room in city for vendettas

I was appalled at Mayor [Dianne] Keller’s “hypothetical directive,” in which she threatened the Windbreak’s owner, Annette Andres. Keller stated that she could have directed the Wasilla Police Department to give ALL patrons leaving the Windbreak breathalyzer tests. Has Keller ever read the Bill of Rights, particularly the amendment concerning free speech?

Since when has stating an opinion been considered an impropriety? Her not-so-veiled threat is absolutely outrageous. How does she think she has the right to order the WPD to essentially carry out a personal vendetta?

Has she even considered the legal ramifications of such a focus on an individual business? Does she realize that a large portion of the Windbreak’s business is the food served in the restaurant? Could she expect the police to be giving people breathalizer tests after leaving the restaurant after breakfast, following church on Sunday?

Besides the excellent food, the Windbreak has been an upstanding and outstanding member of the business community; a business community that was intact long before the big box stores basically bribed their way into the community.

I am extremely grateful that Diane Keller is not running for re-election. Fortunately, Verne Rupright is running for mayor. Maybe he can make some common sense out of the way this city has been run during Keller’s tenure. With Keller’s outrageous stance, perhaps her finances need to be investigated. The scrutiny that brought Vic Kohring down should be applicable to all politicians.
