No to Susitna Dam Fund

To the editor

The $33.5 million Susitna Dam Fund should be re-appropriated.

These monies are held by the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) to keep the proposed Susitna Dam on life support until the price of oil goes up. The state should re-appropriate these funds amongst Alaska Marine Highway System, Alaska State Troopers Girdwood and Talkeetna Stations, Alaska Department of Fish and Game Chinook Recovery Program, and the Alaska Division of Forestry wildfire fighting funds.

The Alaska Energy Authority has shamelessly promoted the dam in a favorable way as cheap power, especially to Fairbanks, and benign to fisheries. That is inaccurate. The study data points to the exact opposite.

This project is a black hole that sucks money from the state. The public knows that this dam and its power will be subsidized by both the state and federal governments all the way.
