Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

ANNETTE COLE
Anchorage resident Annette Cole, 98, died of natural causes Nov. 22, 2006, at Palmer Pioneer Home in Palmer.
A visitation is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at First American Baptist Church, 1200 E. 27th Ave. in Anchorage.
Services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. John Jeffers officiating. Burial and family graveside services will be in spring of 2007, next to her husband, Leslie, at Anchorage Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will include Bert Hall, Robert Leach, Jim Hosler, Russ Mumm, Bill Brokaw and Al Hanisch.
She was born Feb. 7, 1908, in Homestead, Wisc. She graduated from Kingsburg High School in 1927, and from California Lutheran Hospital Nursing School in Los Angeles in 1930. After nursing school, she worked at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, Calif., doing staff and special duty nursing.
Upon her and Leslie's move to Alaska in September 1952, she became a full-time mother and homemaker.
She also later worked as an apartment manager.
She was involved with many service organizations, including Easter Seals, Cancer Society, Food Bags for People, the Guilded Cage, American Association of Retired Persons and the Anchorage Pioneer Home Gift Shop.
She was a charter member of the First American Baptist Church of Anchorage. She received numerous awards for her endless volunteer services from the church, including 1962 Woman of the Year, and in 1988, the kitchen of the church became known as the Annette Cole's kitchen.
As a tireless volunteer of Alaska Children Services, she received an award for 15
years of dedicated services (1966-1981).
In 1965, the Anchorage Christian Children's Home was opened. She served as a volunteer and gave many hours
of work for this worthwhile charity.
Because of her dedication to it, when the new home opened in 1971, it was named in honor of her and her husband.
She loved to knit, embroider and crochet.
She had a beautiful flower garden every year, along with currants and raspberries from which she made homemade jams and jellies.
Her family wrote, “Annette will be remembered by her family and friends as a warm, kind-hearted and strong-willed woman.
“She never tired of doing for others. Her entire life was dedicated to her family, church and service organizations. She always welcomed visiting family and friends, including her tenants who lived upstairs, into her home, and kept in contact with many of her classmates from nursing school. She took much pride and joy in her flower garden and her berries. Everyone who loved her will always miss her.”
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Linda Cole of Wasilla; grandchildren, Paula Cole of Anchorage, and Philip Cole and his wife Autumn of Wasilla; great-grandchildren, Dayne Cole and Bristol Cole of Wasilla; nephew, Stan Swanson of California; and sister, Fern Strong of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Cole; and five brothers and sisters.
The family suggests memorial donations to Alzheimer's Disease Resource Agency of Alaska, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage AK 99507.
Arrangements were made with Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street,
Anchorage.
CHARLIE ‘STEVE' DUNCAN
Palmer resident Charlie “Steve” Duncan, 57, died from complications of cancer at his home on Nov. 22, 2006. He was born Jan. 27, 1949, in Chattanooga, Tenn.
A memorial service will is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at Lazy Mountain Bible Church in Palmer with the Rev. Bob Lee officiating.
Additional services will be held in Rossville, Ga., at a
later date.
His ashes will be scattered by his family at a later date.
He attended Rossville High School in Georgia, graduating in 1967, and then served in
the U.S. Air Force from 1968
to 1972.
He earned his bachelor of science degree in agriculture /natural resource management from the University of Arizona in 1980.
He moved to Alaska in 1997, residing in the Palmer area. He was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1997 to 2005, and with the Environmental Protection Agency from 2005 until the time of his death.
His hobbies and special interests included woodworking, canoeing, hiking, water resource conservation, camping and road trips.
He was a member of Lazy Mountain Bible Church.
He received numerous awards and recognitions from the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers, as well as from local communities.
Family members stated, “Steve was a devoted and loving family man, best friend, and one of God's stewards for this Earth.”
He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie D. Duncan.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Duncan of Palmer; daughter, Nikki Duncan of Alamogordo, N.M.; son, Charles Duncan of Alamogordo; mother, Marcell Duncan of Rossville; brother, Roger Duncan of Martin, Ga.; sister, Debbie Farrington of San Diego; nieces, Rhonda Higgs and Adrienne Finch of San Diego; and nephews, Jay and Tyler Farrington of San Diego, and Josh Duncan of Lavonia, Ga.
