On Saturday, the Colony Knights will battle for the first state title in the history of the CHS football program. So it's probably not much of a surprise that the Knights are the most represented program on the 2006 All-Railbelt football squads.
Colony scored four of the six major awards, and placed nine players on the first team.
Senior Chebon Jimenez was named the offensive player of the year, while earning both first-team offense and first-team defense honors.
Senior George Percak-Dennett is the defensive player of the year, and also earned first-team honors on both offense and defense.
Senior Justin Beauchamp is the conference's lineman of the year, and was named to the first-team defense.
In his second year at the helm of CHS football, Jamie Mayo was named head coach of the year.
Jimenez is the state's rushing leader with 1,551 yards and 16 touchdowns through the state semifinals.
From his tight end position, Percak-Dennett has 25 catches for 299 yards and seven touchdowns.
On the other side of the ball, Percak-Dennett captained a defense that has allowed a mere 5.5 points per game this season.
Colony senior Teddy Babcock earned first-team honors at quarterback over Juneau-Douglas senior Chris Hinkley, the 2005 large-school player of the year.
Babcock completed 85 of his 133 attempts for 1,186 yards. He tossed 20 touchdowns, and threw just four interceptions.
“Teddy Babcock's our leader. He's our emotional leader. He's our team leader,” Percak-Dennett said after Colony's 12-0 win over Chugiak in the large-school state semifinals on
Friday.
In that win, Babcock rushed for a pivotal 13-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and connected with Percak-Dennett on a score in the third quarter.
Also named to the first team for Colony were mammoth offensive tackle Wade Bowen, defensive tackle James Savage and a pair of defensive backs - Ryan Coffman and Robin Minoza.
Beauchamp and Savage also earned second-team honors on the offensive line. Coffman was named second-team at wide receiver. Regis Price and Greg Andrews also received second-team honors on defense.
Palmer placed four players on the first team.
Senior Tanner Grover was named first-team at both wide receiver and defensive back.
Senior Haakan Bohman finished sixth in the state with 1,141 yards and 14 touchdowns, and was rewarded with first-team honors at running back.
Offensive tackle Everest Moore and long snapper Ian Heindel also were named to the first team.
Kelly Devon (offensive tackle and defensive tackle), Nate Svedin (defensive end), Shannon Sawyer (inside linebacker), Ton Eller (defensive back) and Adam Davis (punter) earned second-team honors.
Wasilla seniors Vladimir Dahl and Jeff Champion also received first-team honors. Dahl was named first-team kicker, after hitting seven field goals during the season. Champion was named first-team return
specialist.
Defensive end A.J. Schirack, linebacker Zach Orr and defensive back Jeremiah Collins were named to the second team for Wasilla.
