Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Joanne Mary Maki, 52, died of cancer Aug. 25, 2000, at her home.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at Kehl's Palmer Mortuary, 209 S. Alaska St.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Mission, 505 S. Bailey in Palmer, with the Rev. Blackburn officiating. Graveside services will follow at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery on the Old Glenn Highway.
Pallbearers will be Larry Schnell, Ray Nelson, Dave Gilliam, Chuck Maki, Cole Dupuy and Raymond Gillespie.
Mrs. Maki was born Sept. 25, 1947, in Berkeley, Calif. After graduating from high school and attending college for two years, she moved to Alaska in 1978.
She worked at Matanuska Electric Association in Palmer; the Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union, also in Palmer; and was the executive officer for the Mat-Su Home Builders Association in Wasilla.
She was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Mission, and was active in Habitat for Humanity.
Her family wrote, Joanne loved her pets, family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, camping, travel, fishing and white-water rafting. Joanne was a loving mother and wife, who always had time to help others. She touched many lives in her work and at play, and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Maki; son, Brendan Keidatz; stepson, Chuck Maki; stepdaughter, Debbie Maki; brother, William Mallory; granddaughter, Keri Michelle Maki; many aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Mat-Su, 3051 E. Palmer-Wasilla Hwy., Wasilla, AK, 99654.
