She was active in Anchorage politics in the late 60s and early 70s. She moved to Willow in 1971, where she and her husband, Joe, built their &#8220southern mansion.” She was widowed in 1980, and later wrote the following poem:

&#8220The Widows on the Hill,” They call us the merry widows, From up in Hatcher Pass Hill, Four years ago death took Joe, And recently visited Will. We are city girls in the country, Learning the homesteaders ways, Instead of typing and filing, Outdoor chores fill our days. We plant and we reap; we move and rake, We cut moose and pluck chickens till bare, We pick strawberries and blueberries and can them, And even cut each other's hair. We play a lot of games and cards, And share a lot of meals, Sometimes we even disagree, But we know how each other feels. Some think we must get bored, Being so far from the city, But we find life quite fine, And have no need of pity. If you find yourself without a mate, And feel &#8220this is the end,” Just think of us on Hatcher Pass, And find yourself a friend. [Marguerite F. Spain, 7/84]
