In an update to the earlier story of an officer-involved shooting in Meadow Lakes last week, the name of the officer has been released. The Department of Public Safety identified the officer as Kody Haley, who was placed on seven days of administrative leave per department policy.

According to the online dispatch, Alaska State Troopers (AST) were responding to a welfare check in the Meadow Lakes area about 10:30 p.m. Friday, after a woman called 911 multiple times. Troopers made contact with the woman once upon arrival, and tried multiple times to get the women to leave the residence with her hands empty. The woman instead produced a handgun and pointed at a trooper, AST officials said. The officer then shot the woman.

“The trooper shot the female as a result of her actions,” AST wrote in an online dispatch published Saturday.

The woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries following an officer-involved shooting in the Meadow Lakes area Friday night, according to Alaska State Troopers. Authorities say the woman injured in the shooting remains hospitalized.

During the subsequent investigations, troopers determined that the handgun was a BB gun that did not have the orange tip and, “closely resembled a semiautomatic handgun,” AST officials said.

Per department policy, the trooper who fired their weapon has been placed on a seven-day administrative leave and their name will be released in three days. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, which will also be reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecution.
